Local History
Lonato, a town inhabited since prehistoric times, with its walls, castles and the Cathedral of San Giovanni Battista tells its relevance in history.
At the foot of Mount Rova stands tall the Visconti-Venetian “La Rocca”, a castle fortress dating back to the 12th century which today retains its attractiveness for tourism, hosts important receptions and celebrations as well as the traditional display of flowers in the spring period together with a breathtaking view on the historic village and Lake Garda. Among the other monuments of artistic interest are : the Cathedral of San Giovanni Battista, built in Baroque style with the unmistakable dome and marble facades, the “Casa del Podestà” built in the mid-fifteenth century, purchased in 1906 by the well knonw Lawyer and politician Ugo da Como who commissioned the restoration to the most respected architect of the time in the Brescia area Antonio Tagliaferri. Ugo da Como lived there until his death and today the House is the actual headquarter of the “Ugo da Como Foundation”, also known as the “Casa Biblioteca”, counting over 50,000 volumes.
About the Town
Lonato del Garda, easily accessible via A4 motorway (Desenzano exit), boasts a strategic position, halfway between Milan and Venice, being able at the same time to guarantee the privacy that distinguishes this pretty village which has a population of about 16,000 inhabitants.
